Sunset Rock State Park Trail (+ tips for planning a sunset hike!)

One of my absolute favorite things to do is to pick up take out after work, pack it up and hike to a beautiful viewpoint for dinner. This hike, located in Sunset Rock State Park on the Plainville/Southington line, certainly lives up to it’s name as one of the best local spots to catch a sunset.

There are three different trailheads here — take the one in the middle directly in the back of the parking lot and following the blue and orange markers. After just 20-25 minutes, you’re met with a beautiful rock ledge overlooking Crescent Lake. It’s the perfect place to post up with dinner and take in the beauty. While there are a few miles left in the 3.2 trail, save that for a time when you’re there during daylight, and hike back down the way you came to get back to your car before dark.

Looking to plan a sunset hike of your own, either locally or around the world? Here are some things to consider…

TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL SUNSET HIKE

  • Use a predictor app: For an awesome sunset hike, pick a day that is either entirely sunny or has a nice mix of sun and clouds. If it’s too cloudy or hazy, you might be disappointed. There are a few resources that can help predict the quality of the sunset (or sunrise) in your area, like the SkyCandy app, SunsetWx and the mySunset app. While they’re not always 100% accurate, it’s a great way to gauge it before heading out.

  • Look up the exact sunset time: Days are getting shorter and shorter this time of year. Look up the sunset time and plan on arriving to the viewpoint at least 30-45 minutes in advance. Use this information to back into the time that you’ll need to arrive at the trailhead to begin the hike.

  • Download the map on the AllTrails app beforehand: This one has been a lifesaver — AllTrails will pinpoint where you are and a blue dot will move along with you as you go, whether or not you have service. This is the best way to ensure you’re on the correct path. AllTrails is also great for finding new trails, tracking your progress, and getting GPS directions right to the trailhead. It’s a must-have for both new and frequent hikers!

  • Pick a trail you’re familiar with: Do a trail that you’ve done once or twice in daylight and preferably, one that has a short distance back to the car. If it’s under a mile back, you’re likely to get back before it gets completely dark out. But if it does end up getting dark, you’ll feel much more comfortable having done the trail before.

  • Charge your phone: This will ensure that you have access to AllTrails, the flashlight feature, cell service and of course, your camera.

  • Bring extra layers… as the sun goes down, so do temperatures. It’s best to be prepared!

  • Make it an experience: Grab your favorite take out, pack drinks and blanket and make it an experience. It’s so nice to change up your normal weekday routine with a fun and active night out in nature!
